Funds raised at Get Your Rear in Gear Orlando help SOS by Urbander fund Colon Cancer education and awareness program

Orlando, FL., February 2, 2019 — The Colon Cancer Coalition is awarding SOS by Urbander with a grant for a Colon Cancer awareness and education program. The money for this grant comes from funds that were raised during the 2018 Get Your Rear in Gear – Orlando – held in May 2018.  SOS by Urbander will focus on the delivery of evidence-based, culturally appropriate, education and outreach to the public and to health care professionals.

“Colon cancer affects in all racial and ethnic groups, most often found in people age 50 and older.  We have all, in one way or another, being affected by it.  This grant will help us spread the word about the importance of getting screened for colorectal cancer,” said Dr. Maria Lunna Garcia de la Noceda, Executive Director for SOS by Urbander.

Sami Haiman-Marrero, President of the SOS by Urbander Board of Directors, mentioned that “we will apply evidence-based strategies, promote services and or programs in new or innovative ways to increase current rates of recruitment, provision of services, and cancer detection leading to an increase in survival rates.”

A check presentation ceremony will be held on May 19.  A local Get Your Rear in Gear representative will be on hand to present a check to the President of the Board of Directors during the 2019 Get your Rear in Gear Orlando, which will be held at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake.

Registration for Get Your Rear in Gear – Orlando on May 19 is now open. Please visit coloncancercoalition.org/Orlando for more information or to be a part of the event.   Online registration closes Wednesday, May 16 at midnight.
